Lot No. 265

Pseudo Guardi

(active in the Veneto in the 18th century / attivo in Veneto nel secolo XVIII) A pair of still lifes / Coppia di nature morte, oil on canvas, each 46 x 35.5 cm, framed (2)

This elegant floral composition is one of a well known series of still lifes, which were originally attributed to Francesco Guardi. Giuseppe Fiocco was the first to distinguish between ‘Flower painter, Guardi’ and ‘Francesco Guardi as flower painter' (in Arte Veneta, 1950). The lack of reliable sources has meant that art history has had to catalogue these works as being by 'Pseudo Guardi' or the 'Maestro dei fiori guardeschi'. It has been possible to identify more than one hand, and the influence of painters, such as Lopez, Marchioni and Caffi are noticeable. They give us the impression of Venetian taste of the time, which was also widespread in Piedmont.
